SOLEMNITY of Saint Luke, Apostle and Evangelist

Saint Luke wrote the third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles.

He was a Greek doctor who converted to Christianity and was a companion of the Apostle Saint Paul. According to the early Church historian Eusebius, he was born at Antioch in Syria.

Luke’s Gospel shows special sensitivity to evangelizing Gentiles. In it we hear the parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus praising the Gentiles (the widow of Zarephath and Naaman the Syrian) and the story of the grateful leper who is a Samaritan.

Saint Luke is symbolized by a winged ox, a figure of sacrifice, service and strength.

 

Today our parish community celebrates the Solemnity of Saint Luke, the Titular and Patron of our Parish.
